Renowned for her written reflections and video essays on technology and power, her work challenges digital capitalism, examines the transformation of images in the post-truth era, and explores the new geopolitical order shaped by the battle for digital space. Her lectures are considered an extension of her artistic practice, serving as a stage for her inquisitive and analytical thinking. They also highlight key aesthetic-political concepts she has developed, such as the "poor image" and "circulationism."
A MASTERCLASS WITH RADU JUDE
Monday Novemebr 25
~ 18:00
~ Cine Estudio Círculo de Bellas Artes
Free, until full capacity is reached.
English.
Over two prolific decades, Radu Jude (Bucharest, 1977) has established himself as a central figure in Eastern European cinema—a reputation solidified by awards such as the Silver Bear at the Berlinale for
Aferim! (2015) and the Golden Bear for
Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn (2021). Over the years, Jude has developed an increasingly daring and experimental style, combining formal innovation with political commitment to confront Romania's dictatorial past and neoliberal present, bridging between the two through his cinema.
Relentless in his pursuit of cinematic language and historical representation, since 2006 Jude has directed an extensive array of feature and short films, both documentaries and fiction. His works have earned widespread acclaim at festivals such as Berlin and Locarno. Embracing contradictions, his unbridled and unconventional cinema connects deeply with the spectres of the past and the turbulence of the present, portraying with sharp, caustic humor a society grappling with its contradictions and hypocrisies. Intuitive, audacious, constantly evolving, restless, fearless, and impossible to categorize, Radu Jude stands as one of the most uncompromising voices in contemporary cinema. He continues to surprise and innovate in each of his works, never wavering in his commitment to the present and to life, and crafting a cinematic oeuvre that reflects his own distinctive style.
A TALK WITH ALBERT SERRA
Monday Novemebr 25
~ 20:30
~ Cineteca
€5. Tickets available at the box office and on Cineteca’s website.
On the occasion of the Márgenes Special Award to Albert Serra, the renowned and indomitable Catalan filmmaker will hold a conversation with writer and journalist Blanca Lacasa.
Throughout his career, Serra has stood out as a filmmaker committed to the creative act, indifferent to criticism; an author who moves with absolute ease between art and cinema, blurring the boundaries between the avant-garde and tradition. Through each of his films, Serra explores cinematic form to propose new ways of thinking about the image and the world. His work distances itself from conventional narrative forms and delves into territories situated beyond modernity and cinema itself. The result is a cinematic universe unlike any other: provocative, challenging, coherent, and profoundly poetic.
In this talk, Serra will share reflections on his extensive practice and creative processes. A conversation that will bring us closer to one of the most audacious and provocative filmmakers of our time.
Writer and journalist Blanca Lacasa published last year Las hijas horribles (Libros del KO), an essay that delves into 'daughterhood', especially the sometimes thorny bond between daughters and mothers, and which is now in its fifth edition (with translation rights sold to China). Previously, she had published a handful of children's books, including Ni guau, ni miau, ¡Ey! Esta es mi casa, ¡Ey! Este es mi colega, and in 2024, La oveja 19 or, together with Lorenzo Montatore, Tengo un miedo. She has collaborated—and continues to do so—with numerous media outlets that would be tedious and unnecessary to mention. She hosted a radio program, La Flaneadora, on the sadly defunct M21. She sang in a band, Plastic d’amour. She loves making lists of just about anything, is an expert at tasting Russian salad, watches films compulsively, wanders aimlessly, and is hardly uninterested in anything.
