Buti
Spain
Plot
The project explores the relationship between filmmakers Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet with the village of Buti, weaving their cinema, regional history, literature, and local theatrical traditions with which they established a permanent dialogue. Buti is a small village in Tuscany, in the province of Pisa. From 1978 to 2014, filmmakers Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet repeatedly traveled there to shoot some of their films with local actors. Buti, the village, is the epicenter of a coordinate system that runs through Straub and Huillet's cinema: working with "non-professional" actors, the reconstruction of a community after World War II, and the writings of Cesare Pavese and Elio Vittorini. Buti, the book, traces these encounters between cinema and territory, between filmmakers and locals, between the written and the spoken word through a narrative woven from essays, research, and travel chronicles.
